  • The Atmospheric Technique

This is an Atmospheric Landscape painting in watercolor. This particular artwork has a path coming down from the horizon line at a slant towards the left which is largely white with some gray sweeps for shadows. The main colors making up this piece are sodalite genuine and tundra violet both of which granulate with more dilution. This results in pigments that separate and settle in the dry work of art creating and interesting atmosphere. Texture is achieved by using dark and medium value along with untouched watercolor paper. Grass is added for movement and more texture. These mass tone pigments are diluted upwards creating a gradient of that makes up the atmosphere that is visible in these lighter values.
    Dusk in Winter

For this piece I really wanted to bring out the granulating effects of Schmincke’s Tundra Violet. Indigo provides a good grounding color that does not granulate which allows the Tundra Violet to really shine.

  • Atmospheric Practice

When I am trying out a new technique or color combination, I like to make practice pieces in a sketchbook to test them out before committing to a larger format on higher quality watercolor paper. This particular art piece tests a heavier foreground with Rose of Ultramarine and Indigo.
